Phulbani, in Odisha’s emerald Kandhamal district, cradled by the Eastern Ghats, breathes through its 60% lush virgin forests and the spirit of the Dongria and Kutia Kondh tribes. With the Pila Salunki River offering little for farming, livelihoods here blossom from the forest's wild plants, herbs and Kandhamal’s famed GI-tagged turmeric, prized for its rich aroma and healing potency.

A one-day
Bioenzyme training by Biozazen, Reliance Foundation, Gates Foundation and Harsha Trust brought eco-livelihood skills to tribal women in turning simple household waste into powerful, chemical-free cleaning solutions. The session sparked both learning and laughter, but my "aha" moment came when, after I mentioned that bioenzymes reduce flies and mosquitoes, the women smiled and said, “Then malaria will reduce too!” In that moment, knowledge met wisdom and the beginning truly felt like today.
